Researchers reveal complex ecosystem changes cause more greenhouse gases to be emitted from peatlands

Peatlands, which make up 3 percent of Earth’s total land area, are known by a number of names — moors, mires, bogs, swamps and portions of permafrost tundra. They also store a significant amount of the Earth’s carbon.

FSU launches Big Bets initiative to tackle big questions

Florida State University has launched a new initiative designed to amplify centers and institutes that are doing high-profile, public-impact research and connect them with donors interested in pursuing big questions. The initiative, Big Bets, is being led by interim Vice President for Research Laurel Fulkerson.

Faculty Spotlight: Paul Renfro

Paul Renfro is an assistant professor in the Department of History, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. His interest in American family values and social norms pushed him to craft his first book, “Stranger Danger: Family Values, Childhood, and the American Carceral State,” as well as his upcoming book, an analysis of Ryan White, an Indiana teenager who became a public figure in the fight against the stigma of HIV/AIDS.

FSU physics professor wins early career award from Department of Energy

A Florida State University researcher has received an award from the Department of Energy to conduct cutting-edge research on quantum materials and optical physics. Assistant Professor of Physics Guangxin Ni was selected to receive the award as part of the DOE’s Early Career Research Program. Under the program, university-based researchers will receive $150,000 annually over five years to help fund their research.

Expert ready to provide insight on global ocean health crisis

For the past two weeks, a cargo ship has been burning off the coast of Sri Lanka filled with several tons of plastic pellets loaded with toxic chemicals. According to Sri Lanka’s Marine Protection Authority, this is “one of the worst beach pollutions in our history.” Ian MacDonald, a professor in the Florida State University Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science, is available to discuss the environmental impact of the event.

Student Spotlight: Trystan Loustau

Trystan Loustau is a junior majoring in psychology and minoring in computer science and statistics, all departments part of the College of Arts and Sciences. Loustau, a Presidential Scholar and Honors Experience student, actively participates in FSU’s Undergraduate Research Program through the Center for Undergraduate Research and Engagement and received an IDEA Grant in April 2020 for her research on psychological morality and immune system function.
