FSU to recognize young alumni in annual ceremony

The Florida State University Alumni Association will recognize 18 young alumni for their significant contributions to their professions, communities or alma mater during the ninth annual Young Alumni Awards Ceremony, presented virtually Friday, Oct. 9. “Young alumni make up the largest demographic in the FSU alumni family; nearly one-third of all living Florida State alumni are under the age of 35,” said Julie Decker, president and CEO of the FSU Alumni Association. “We are so proud of our Young Alumni Network, which serves as an avenue to connect, re-engage and leverage the talents of the young alumni base to further the mission of Florida State University.”

Alumni Spotlight: Mustakimur R. Khandaker

Mustakimur R. Khandaker earned his doctorate from the Department of Computer Science, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, and graduated in July. Khandaker published research at prestigious conferences including ASPLOS 2020, USENIX Security 2019, and Euro S&P 2019, and has accepted the position of tenure-track assistant professor of computer science at the University of Georgia.

FSU assistant professor earns dual fellowships to research revolutionary Cuba

A Florida State University faculty member has been awarded two prestigious fellowships from the Florida Education Fund and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture to conduct research for the upcoming book, “Carlota’s Heirs: Masculinity and Military Service in Revolutionary Cuba.” Anasa Hicks, an assistant professor in FSU’s Department of History, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, is a recipient of the FEF’s McKnight Junior Faculty Fellowship and the Schomburg Fellowship from the Schomburg Center Scholars-in-Residence Program at the New York Public Library.

FSU sets school record with nine Fulbright Scholars

Nine Florida State University faculty members have been selected as U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program award recipients, setting a new FSU record for most Fulbright Scholars in one year. These individuals plan to teach and conduct research as part of opportunities funded by the U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program during the 2020-2021 school year.

After Danielle Mason earned her first bachelor's degree at Florida State University, she realized that FSU had become her home. Mason earned another bachelor's degree from FSU before helping her husband kickstart a Seminole service committee as a branch of the Jacksonville Seminoles Club, part of FSU's Alumni Association.

Florida State-led team offers new rules for algae species classification

A team of evolutionary biologists and ecologists, led by a Florida State University researcher, has a new idea for how scientists should classify algae species. FSU Assistant Professor of Biological Science Sophie McCoy and her team are proposing formal definitions for algae species and subcategories for the research community to consider: They are recommending algae be classified first by DNA and then by other traits.

Florida State retains Top 20 status in U.S. News rankings, advances in several key metrics

Florida State University retained its place in the Top 20 among national public universities in the latest U.S. News & World Report rankings, while improving in several key measures considered in the publication’s methodology. FSU is No. 19 on the list, marking the second consecutive year that the university placed in the Top 20.

FSU-led research team discovers unique supernova explosion

One-hundred million light years away from Earth, an unusual supernova is exploding. That exploding star — which is known as “supernova LSQ14fmg” — was the faraway object discovered by a 37-member international research team led by Florida State University Assistant Professor of Physics Eric Hsiao. Their research, which was published in The Astrophysical Journal, helped uncover the origins of the group of supernovae this star belongs to.
