Taking courses at another institution while still an active student at FSU is referred to as transient coursework.
- A transient student is an active FSU student who enrolls in coursework at a different college or university for one term. In this case:
- FSU is your parent institution/school.
- The other college or university is your temporary host institution/school.
- To initiate the transient process, you should start by meeting with your academic advisor to determine if you are eligible to do so and to determine which courses you should take.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements for Transient Work Approval:
- Must be an active degree seeking student at FSU.
- Must be in good academic standing and have completed one semester at FSU.
- Must have a completed Financial Aid profile to access financial aid, including Bright Futures for the coursework.
- Financial aid disbursement will be based on the student’s cumulative enrollment status for the term.
If you are approved to take transient coursework, keep the following in mind:
- Transient approval does not guarantee that the course you have requested will be offered by the host institution, or that you will be guaranteed a seat in the approved course(s).
- Only take the courses for which you received transient approval.
- Identify multiple courses which can meet the designated graduation requirements and include the desired course and its alternatives on your transient form. Include a note to clarify your intention in the Student Comment box.
- E.g., “I need a 3-hour 3000/4000 level biology course to complete my biological science major. My form includes 12 hours (alternatives), but I only intend to enroll in one 3-hour course. "
- E.g., “I need FRE2220 to satisfy the Arts & Sciences Foreign Language requirement. I am submitting transient forms requesting to take FRE2220 for five different institutions to ensure that I can enroll in the course. I will only enroll at one institution.”
- If you enroll in different or extra courses without transient approval, those courses will still appear on your official transcript from the host institution and will be posted by the FSU Registrar's Office to your academic record.
- Enrolling in different or extra courses may not meet the intended graduation requirement(s) and can negatively impact your graduation timeline and result in being required to take additional coursework through FSU to satisfy the university's residency requirements for graduation.
- Request official transcripts to be sent to the FSU Office of Admissions and Records once your final grades are available.
- Transcripts are not automatically sent; you must initiate the request with the host institution.
- All attempted coursework at the host institution will appear on the official transcript, regardless of transient approval.
Before Submitting a Transient Request:
Verify Course Details with the Host Institution
- Identify and list courses to take be taken at temporary host institution as they appear in the host institution’s catalog/bulletin. This information will be used to determine how the courses will transfer back to FSU (equivalency).
- Determine if the host institution will be offering the courses in your preferred format (in-person or online) during the semester you wish to take them.
- Check to see if the course you wish to take transiently has a prerequisite or corequisite requirement (e.g., CHM 2210 and CHM 2210L).
- Be prepared to provide the institution/department offering the course with your unofficial transcript to document that you have successfully completed the prerequisite requirement(s) for the course.
- Determine what is required by the host institution to take classes as a transient or temporary student by communicating with the Admissions Office for that institution.
- What is the deadline to submit an approved transient request form?
- Is a separate admission application required? If so, what is the deadline?
- What documentation (e.g., official or unofficial transcripts) is required?
Discuss your plans with your academic advisor
- Verify the FSU course equivalency and degree-applicability of the requested course to ensure that it will meet the specific university, college, or major graduation requirement you are addressing.
- Review any potential impact on discipline-specific accreditation (i.e., Computer Science – B.S.).
- Confirm how the course will transfer back to FSU (equivalency) with your advisor. If the course equivalency is not on file with the university, your advisor will guide you through the course evaluation request process with the appropriate office(s) and communicate the results of a course evaluation to you.
- Discuss your motivation for taking the course (e.g., requirement for major, minor, COAS foreign language, Core FSU, prerequisite for future degree program, etc.).
- Discuss excess credit implications.
- Discuss potential impact on graduation residency requirements.
- How many hours will you take through FSU after the conclusion of your last transient course?
- Graduation Residency Requirements
- The final 30 hours towards a bachelor’s degree must be completed in residence through FSU (online or face-to-face classes).
- A minimum of 30 of the 45 required earned hours at the 3000/4000 level must be completed through FSU.
- At least half the major, as defined by the department offering the degree program, must be completed through FSU.
- Graduation Residency Exceptions
- 1-6 hours: In cases of emergency, the College of Arts and Sciences can approve a maximum of six hours of the final 30 credit hours to be completed out of residency at another institution, away from FSU.
- Include a request to waive up to six hours of the 30-hour residency requirement in the Student Comments Section of the transient form.
- 7 or more hours: Prior to enrolling in any courses at another institution, upper division undergraduate COAS students requesting to take more than six hours away from FSU in the last 30 hours must document exceptional circumstances by completing the COAS Residency Waiver Request form.
- 1-6 hours: In cases of emergency, the College of Arts and Sciences can approve a maximum of six hours of the final 30 credit hours to be completed out of residency at another institution, away from FSU.
Discuss the proper submission method
- Taking courses at FAMU: Refer to the FSU Registrar’s Website for Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University–Florida State University Interinstitutional Registration (FAMU–FSU Cooperative Program)
- Taking courses through another State of Florida public institution: Refer to FloridaShines.org to access the electronic Transient Student Admission Application form
- Taking courses through a private institution in Florida or an out of state institution: Refer to the FSU Registrar’s Website to access the transient form for private or out-of-state institutions
Students who are requesting to reschedule a final examination for a course offered through the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) must:
-
Contact the Instructor of Record (IOR) for the course via FSU email to see if the IOR will allow the student to reschedule within the posted final examination week for the semester in question.
-
Refer to the FSU Registrar’s Office website for Final Examination Policies and fall and spring semester Exam Schedules.
-
The student must first receive written permission from the instructor confirming all rescheduled exam details, including date, time, location, and format, before proceeding to the next step.
-
The rescheduled exam must still fall within the final examination week for the semester.
-
-
-
Petition the COAS Student Affairs Office using this Undergraduate Request to Reschedule a Final Exam form.
To guarantee a timely approval:
-
Contact your IOR as early as possible regarding your request.
-
Submit your request prior to the last day of classes.
-
Allow the COAS a minimum of two business days to complete their review after the form has been completed by you and approved by your Instructor of Record (IOR).
-
Review completion is not guaranteed if the completed form is submitted to the COAS Dean’s Office less than two business days prior to the scheduled or rescheduled final examination, whichever comes first.
-
Both the student and instructor will receive a decision notification via Docusign from the Student Affairs Office in the COAS Dean’s Office once the request has been reviewed.
Students who wish to change to or add a major in the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) must first meet with a COAS academic advisor in the department/program offering the major. Students looking to add or change to a major outside of COAS will need to meet with an advisor for that major.
Requirements for changing to a COAS major
Students changing from a major outside of COAS into any COAS major must have at least a 2.0 FSU Cumulative GPA.
Students must be on track for mapping with the major they are changing to at the point of the major change. Students who are not on track for mapping will not have their major changed.
Adding an additional major or degree program (dual degrees) in COAS
Students must:
- First be certified their upper-division graduating academic college before a second major can be added.
- See Certification Guidance below.
- Be on track for mapping in their primary major and within one term of mapping requirements for their second major at the point of completing the major addition.
- Successfully add the additional major or degree program before earning 90 cumulative semester hours.
- Use the COAS Request to Add, Change, or Remove an Additional Major or Degree to submit the request.
- Be prepared to upload the major change form provided by an academic advisor for the additional major or degree program
Certification Guidance
For students with a primary major in COAS: To be certified upper division, all majors in COAS require:
- A minimum 52 earned credit hours
- A minimum 2.00 FSU Cumulative GPA
- Successful completion of most of the General Education requirements including English Composition, and Quantitative and Logical Thinking, or an A.A. degree from a State of Florida public post-secondary institution.
For students with a primary major in another college: refer to that Academic Dean’s office for certification information.
Note:
- Diplomas reflect only the student’s degree program name which may differ from the name of the student’s major.
- Minors, majors, additional majors, tracks, or specializations are not printed on the diploma.
- The transcript reflects all majors and certificate programs but does not include minors, tracks, or specializations.
Adding a major after earning 90 credit hours
University policy requires that students successfully add any additional majors or degree program before earning 90 cumulative semester hours.
Students who have earned 90 or more cumulative semester hours wishing to add an additional major or dual degree should follow the steps below to petition for an exception to add or change an additional major or degree program.
- Complete the COAS Additional Major/Dual Degree Academic Plan of Study form using DocuSign, with the academic advisors for the primary major and additional major.
- The primary academic advisor will be prompted to:
- Review the academic plan
- Upload a current academic progress check for the primary major.
- The secondary academic advisor will be prompted to:
- Review the academic plan
- Upload:
- The Major Change Form
- A current academic progress check for the additional major.
- The primary academic advisor will be prompted to:
-
Submit the completed DocuSign PDF using the COAS Request to Add, Change, or Remove an Additional Major or Degree to formally submit the exception petition.
If one of the majors/degrees is located outside of COAS, both the academic dean’s office for each major must grant approval for the change.
Note: The student’s primary academic dean’s office has final authority regarding the exception to add an additional major or dual degree after earning 90 or more semester credit hours.
The COAS Dean’s Office considers the following factors during the holistic review of an exception petition requesting to add an additional major or dual degree (with 90 or more earned hours):
- Legitimate academic justification for adding the additional major or degree program
- Will the addition:
- Extend a student’s graduation beyond four years of enrollment?
- Require more than 160 earned semester credit hours to complete all degree requirements?
- Cause the student to exceed their Excess Credit Threshold?
- Refer to the Registrar’s website for more information about the Excess Credit-Hour Surcharge.
- Percentage of the requirements for the additional major/degree program already completed
- Student’s academic standing at FSU.
Students with multiple majors or degree plans may be required by the University and/or the Dean’s office to complete a graduation plan with the Graduation & Planning Strategies Office.
Single Baccalaureate, Dual Baccalaureate, and Consecutive (or Second) Baccalaureate Degrees
Students should note that there is a difference between a second major and a second baccalaureate (bachelor’s) degree. In all cases, a student must have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or better on all FSU courses to earn the bachelor’s degree or degrees.
Single bachelor’s degree with more than one major: To obtain a second major, one must meet all requirements of the college of the primary major, but only the major requirements of the secondary major.
Dual bachelor's degrees: In rare cases, students may pursue multiple bachelor's degrees simultaneously. The requirements for earning concurrent, or dual bachelor's degrees, are:
- Satisfy the requirements for each major/minor as well as individual college requirements for both the first and the second degrees
- Complete 30 credit hours in residence, in addition to the hours required for the first degree, for a minimum total of 150 earned hours
- Complete all University degree requirements
Both degrees must be awarded in the same term.
Consecutive bachelor's degree beyond the first bachelor's degree (Second bachelor’s degree): Students may receive additional baccalaureate degrees beyond the first degree in cases where a bachelor's degree has already been awarded. University policy prohibits the awarding of more than one degree from a specific degree program due to the overlap of core requirements of that degree program.
- Students should seek guidance from their advisors or their college when choosing to pursue a double major or dual degree.
- This policy applies to both current and readmitted students.
The requirements for an additional bachelor's degree are:
- The requirements for each major/minor, as well as individual college requirements for the second degree
- A student completing a consecutive bachelor’s degree beyond the first bachelor’s degree must complete:
- A new major (including digital literacy)
- With regards to the major, students will be permitted to use courses completed in a prior bachelor’s degree to satisfy the major’s prerequisites and core graduation requirements, but any elective courses cannot be applied to the consecutive bachelor’s degree.
- A new minor for the second degree
- This is in addition to the minor from the student’s initial degree.
- Satisfy the COAS Foreign Language Proficiency graduation requirement
- Foreign language proficiency, once established, may be used towards satisfying the COAS Foreign Language Proficiency graduation requirement for the consecutive bachelor’s degree.
- A new major (including digital literacy)
- A minimum of 30 credit hours in residence is completed, in addition to the hours required for the first degree
- The additional 30 credit hours must be completed in residence after the completion of the first degree.
- Hours earned by the student during the completion of the first baccalaureate degree, over and above those extra credit hours required for the first degree, may not be included in the 30 credit hours.
- The State of Florida Civic Literacy Requirement
There are no CoreFSU requirements for the second degree except for Civic Literacy.
Only one minor per degree is needed to meet the College of Arts and Sciences minor requirement for graduation. Please note that minors do not appear on transcripts, nor do they appear on diplomas.
You will formally declare your minor when you request your Arts and Sciences academic progress check, if your major does not have a collateral interdisciplinary minor built into the major.
If you wish to change your minor after your College of Arts and Sciences academic progress check has been completed, you may email our office to notify us that you have changed your minor. We will add this information to your file so our evaluators will be aware of the change at the point of graduation, but we will not issue an additional academic progress check or update the previously issued progress check. Please review the minor requirements listed in the FSU Academic Program Guide to ensure you are meeting those requirements.
Students transferring to FSU with fewer than 60 hours are required by state law to complete a minimum of 9 hours of summer enrollment at State University System institution in the State of Florida.
Students with 80 or more earned hours who have not completed the Summer Enrollment graduation requirement will be prompted to complete a Summer Hours Requirement Waiver through the To-Do List Feature within Student Central.
- These waiver requests are typically placed through a university-monitored process in mid-September each fall semester and mid-January each spring semester. They are not placed during the summer semesters while summer coursework is in progress.
- Students should submit their waiver request by the end of the semester it is initially placed.
The Enrollment Appointments calendar is published once each semester and details the various periods during which you can enroll for classes. View the link to learn more.
Before registering for classes, students should make sure they have cleared all holds from their account. Common holds include completing required health modules, signing the student financial agreement or addressing an advising hold. Visit the University Advising website to learn how to view and clear holds.
To learn how to register for classes, visit the University Advising website.
Email the department offering the course to see what the best strategy is for trying to get into the course. Departments utilizing reserve capacities will let you know when the reserve capacity blocking non-majors will lift. Be prepared to register at 12:01 a.m. when the reserve capacity lifts. Some departments may offer a waiting list. Many students make changes to their schedules throughout the day and night hours while registration is open, so you should check frequently during that period to see if a seat has become available. Students who are persistent in checking for open seats are often able to get into a full course when another student drops a course.
How to Add a Course After Drop/Add Has Ended
- Contact the Instructor or Advising Office. Reach out to the instructor of record for the course or the advising office of the department offering the course to discuss the possibility of adding the course late.
- Obtain Approval. If both the instructor and the department support your request, they will provide you with an add form.
- Submit the Add Form. Send the completed add form directly to the FSU Registrar's Office for processing.
- Important: The add form must be submitted before the 7th-week deadline.
- Adding a Course After the 7th-Week Deadline. Requests made after the 7th-week deadline will require additional approval from the College of Arts and Sciences Dean's Office - Student Affairs.
