FSU anthropologist receives fellowship to study prehistoric violence and inequality during social transitions

A Florida State University faculty member has been awarded a distinguished fellowship from the Aarhus Institute of Advanced Studies at Aarhus University, Denmark, to study the relationship between interpersonal violence and the rise of wealth inequality during societal transitions in Europe, Asia and Africa. Tom Leppard, an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology, part of the College of Arts and Sciences, will use the 12-month fellowship to conduct interdisciplinary research beginning in September.

Alumni Spotlight: Kristie Dick

Kristie Dick received her bachelor’s degree from the Department of Biological Science with a minor from the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, both part of the College of Arts and Sciences, and graduated in July. Because of her many achievements as an undergrad, Dick has been awarded with an honors medallion for dual honors, and has been selected to participate in the Fulbright U.S. Student Program.

Researchers awarded more than $250 million, a new single-year funding record

Florida State University researchers received a record level of funding in the 2020 fiscal year, bringing in $250.1 million in grants from federal, state and private sources. The quarter-billion milestone in research funding is more than $16 million higher than the previous record, which FSU posted in fiscal year 2019.

FSU geologists publish new findings on carbonate melts in Earth’s mantle

Geologists from Florida State University’s Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science have discovered how carbon-rich molten rock in the Earth’s upper mantle might affect the movement of seismic waves. The new research was coauthored by EOAS Associate Professor of Geology Mainak Mookherjee and postdoctoral researcher Suraj Bajgain. Findings from the study were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
