FSU Discovery Days: FSU computer science invites community to explore careers, research and the future of AI
The event, held as part of FSU Discovery Days, a weeklong celebration of research, creativity and discovery across the university, is free and open to the public.
The event will take place:
THURSDAY, OCT. 22
1-5 P.M.
FLORIDA STATE UNIVERSITY
LOVE BUILDING
1017 ACADEMIC WAY
TALLAHASSEE, FL
“Computer science is not just about programming,” said Te-Yen Wu, an assistant professor in FSU’s Department of Computer Science. “Research in computer science teaches students how to think critically, ask the right questions, understand how systems work and ultimately how to harness AI rather than simply use it, and this event will allow attendees to explore how computer science research is shaping the future of AI and beyond.”
The event will highlight how the growth of AI is influencing computer science education, research and career opportunities while introducing attendees to research already underway across the department’s portfolio. Beyond AI, attendees will explore areas of computer science research where human expertise remains essential, including problems without established solutions, existing datasets or proven systems. Registration is recommended and available online.
The afternoon begins at 1 p.m. in Room 101 of the Love Building with an introduction of the department, computer science opportunities at FSU and a brief overview of the day’s activities, which include:
- 1:15-2 p.m.: An undergraduate panel, “AI, Careers and Opportunities,” will explore how AI is changing the field of computer science, emerging career paths, internships and undergraduate research opportunities. Attendees will also have an opportunity to ask questions.
- 2-3 p.m.: FSU computer science faculty will present a series of brief research highlights, introducing current projects, emerging research questions and opportunities for students to become involved.
- 3-5 p.m.: The department will present the FSU Computer Science Open House and Research Showcase in Room 353 and spaces throughout the Love Building. Attendees can visit research labs, view posters and demonstrations, meet faculty and graduate students and learn about ongoing projects and research groups within the department.
