Visiting meteorologist to discuss managing weather, climate risk

The College of Arts and Sciences and the Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Science at Florida State University will host the 2013 Werner A. Baum Lecture on Feb. 26 at FSU.
Speaking at the lecture will be John A. Dutton, a professor emeritus of meteorology and dean emeritus of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at Pennsylvania State University. Dutton will discuss “Buying Better Weather: Strategies for Managing Weather and Climate Risk.”
The lecture, which is free and open to the open, will take place:

In addition to his former career in academia, Dutton now serves as president of Prescient Weather Ltd., a firm providing information and strategies for managing weather and climate risk, and is CEO of the World Climate Service, a commercial, seasonal forecasting enterprise. He is a fellow of the American Meteorological Society and American Association for the Advancement of Science and is the author of a variety of articles on the dynamics of atmospheric motion as well as two textbooks: “Dynamics of Atmospheric Motion” and “Atmospheric Turbulence” (with Hans Panofsky).
The annual Baum lecture series is named for Werner A. Baum, a longtime faculty member and administrator at Florida State. Among his many accomplishments at FSU were creating the Department of Meteorology and serving as dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Baum retired from Florida State in 1990 and died in 1999.
