and premiere of a new documentary

FSU’s Coastal & Marine Lab (FSUCML) will hold its biennial open house on Saturday, April 20, to help recognize the collaborative work scientists are doing to protect and preserve coastal and marine environments. Titled “The Ocean of Tomorrow,” the event will feature sights and activities for the whole family, as well as a special premiere of the latest WPBT2’s “Changing Seas” documentary, “Creatures of the Deep”.

“Creatures of the Deep” features FSUCML scientists, graduate students and technicians conducting research on the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill on deep sea creatures in the Gulf of Mexico. This premiere coincides with the third anniversary of the deadly oil spill, which dumped roughly 4.9 million barrels of crude oil into the Gulf. In the disaster’s aftermath, many questions arose about what lives in the deep waters of the Gulf, and how these animals may have been impacted by the oil.

The open house is family friendly, featuring hands-on activities such as touch tanks and interactive displays, tours of FSU’s new state-of-the-art research vessel, RV APALACHEE, a silent auction, and a scavenger hunt for the kids. Food will also be available for purchase from a local vendor, Seineyard.

The open house will take place:
