Florida State University is ranked among the top producers of patented technologies in a new report from the National Academy of Inventors and the Intellectual Property Owners Association.

FSU is ranked 79th in the world for the number of patents granted in 2017. The annual report is compiled from data from the U.S. Patents and Trademark Office and reflects the cutting-edge research pursued at Florida State and other universities worldwide.

The university produced 34 patented technologies in 2017.

“We are pleased to be included in the report, but we realize that the real value of these patents is when we can turn them into viable business opportunities either through licensing agreements or startup companies,” said Vice President for Research Gary K. Ostrander. “As such, we will continue to press forward on finding new opportunities to move these patented technologies forward into the marketplace.”

The NAI and IPO have published the report annually since 2013 to highlight the vital role patents play in university research and innovation. The report ranks the top 100 universities named on utility patents granted by the USPTO during the 2017 calendar year.
